Press Release - Nike Bike Park Event

October 7th, 2009

Nicholas Wilson Memorial Park to Open Saturday, Oct. 10th

Celebrate BMX in Memory of Nick Wilson

at the Nike 6.0 Banksgiving Jam, October 10th

Newark Valley, NY - Oct. 7th, 2009- The Nicholas Wilson Memorial Park in Newark Valley, NY will celebrate its grand opening this Saturday, October 10th with the Nike 6.0 Banksgiving Jam. The approximate 8,000 square foot public park is built in memory of Nick Wilson, a local rider who died in Iraq while serving his country.  Nick Wilson served as a Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class, EOD Mobile Unit and was a vital member of the Newark Valley BMX scene.

For the past four years, the Village of Newark Valley, local BMXer’s and friends and family of Nicholas Wilson, have been committed to building a community skate and BMX park in honor of Nick. The Village donated the land at 83 Whig Street, and in 2007, the Nick Wilson Memorial Park Fundraising Committee formed to make this dream a reality. Nike was inspired to get involved by local rider Nick Marzolino, who entered an online contest and brought to light the efforts around the Nicholas Wilson Memorial Park. Marzolino originally won a miniramp for his submission; but the spirit of this project inspired Nike to help complete the park.

The Committee hosted various fundraisers, received generous donations from local businesses, and applied and received grants from the Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation and Bassett Youth Foundation for the paving of the park.  The Tioga County Department of Public Works donated their services for paving and worked in cooperation with the Village of Newark Valley DPW and Town of Newark Valley Highway Department; Broome Bituminous generously donated half the asphalt, and now with the help of Nike, the Nicholas Wilson Memorial park will be opening this weekend. This is a monumental event for the community who rallied together for the memory of this fallen soldier, and for the youth who will be able to enjoy a safe place to ride for many years.

Please join us to celebrate BMX and the opening of the park at the 6.0 Banksgiving Jam on October 10th. Banksgiving is a day of shredding that brings together the BMX community for a good ol’ session with friends, pro riders, music and a feast for all.  Nike 6.0 athletes Dennis Enarson of CA and Todd Meyn of Australia will be flying in to celebrate along with Nick Marzolino, who is returning home from his station in Texas, where he too serves his country.

Riders of all levels are welcome. The festivities will run from 1:00-4:00 PM. All participants are required to sign a waiver and wear a helmet. If under the age of 18, a legal guardian signature is mandatory. Waivers will be available onsite or you can download from nike6.com or villageofnewarkvalley.com

See you at Banksgiving!
