Berkshire Emergency Squad, Inc. at a glance…
The Berkshire Emergency Squad, Inc. is a not-for-profit agency incorporated in 2002 when Berkshire Fire Ambulance and Newark Valley Fire Ambulance separated from their fire districts to combine resources. BEMS provides emergent care and transport services to sick and injured people in the communities that we serve.
We operate out of two locations to provide better response during times of immediate need. All of BEMS ambulances and first response vehicles are equipped to provide the highest level pre-hospital care allowed by Regional and State regulations. Some of these tools include: CPAP, Physio-Control Life Pack-12 Bi-Phasic cardiac monitors that are capable of performing EKG monitoring, manual and automated external defibrillation, cardioversion, pacing, end-tidal CO2 monitoring, non-invasive blood pressure measuring, as well as diagnostic quality 12 lead EKGs and telemetry which transmits all monitored data to the regional cardiac care hospital prior to arrival. In addition a myriad of BLS/ALS medications, vascular access options, basic and advanced airway and Oxygen administration tools accompany our providers on every call. BEMS basic life support and advanced life support equipped vehicle and trained providers provide contracted care to the Towns of Richford, Berkshire and Newark Valley. Through ALS First Response Certificate of Need BEMS provides care to the Towns of Lisle, Baker, Triangle, Nanticoke, Maine, Union and Owego. With mutual aide agreements BEMS will provide care in all communities that request our assistance through Tioga County and State Emergency Management plans.
Most importantly is our almost entirely volunteer provider membership whose training range from skilled vehicle operators and patient care aides to paramedics. Our EMS personnel provide emergency care in various circumstances, environments, and settings. All of our providers are required to demonstrate competency in skills and participate in a minimum of six hours continuing medical education on a bi-annual basis in addition to the recertification process every three years in order to maintain their privileged provider certifications.
BEMS not only provides care for emergent situation but also for planned events throughout the region including but not limited to local school athletic events, community festivals and private club sporting events. The Berkshire Emergency Squad is a group of our own community members that volunteer to respond to emergencies in Newark Valley, Berkshire, and Richford. Like any civic organization, we sometimes struggle to get enough volunteers to meet the community’s need. We need help not only staffing the ambulance, but with many background tasks that do not involve direct medical care. No prior experience is necessary; we will provide all required training. No one should take their community emergency services for granted because everyone wants the ambulance to come when they call 911, whether it is for themselves, a family member, your next door neighbor. Please help us to help you. Call 642-3451 to get involved today. We are neighbors helping neighbors, please be one of us.
