Restore New York Grant

August 14th, 2024

THE VILLAGE OF NEWARK VALLEY AWARDED $732,420 IN RESTORE NEW YORK FUNDING

The Village of Newark Valley was recently awarded $732,420 in Restore NY funding for the rehabilitation of two buildings located in the downtown of Newark Valley. 10 and 14-16 Whig Street have been home to many commercial businesses since the Komar’s purchased the buildings. For the past few years, both buildings have remained vacant due to needed repairs. With the help from grant funding, the buildings will be rehabilitated into two residential spaces and one commercial space at 10 Whig Street, and one commercial space and one apartment on the second floor at 14-16 Whig Street. Exterior renovations will take place at both properties, including new windows, roofing, and siding.

Jim Tornatore, Village of Newark Valley Mayor, stated that he “is excited to see these buildings located in downtown Newark Valley come back to life with the help of the Restore NY funding.” These buildings will provide commercial tenants with highly visible storefronts in a walkable area, as well as quality commercial space in which their business will thrive. The development at 10 Whig Street and 14-16 Whig Street will also offer residential tenants affordable quality apartments near places of employment, recreation, dining, and shopping. “With the help of TEAM Tioga, we were able to secure funding in order to bring this vision to fruition,” said Jim Tornatore.

Megan Schnabl, Deputy Director of Tioga County Economic Development & Planning, said “our Team has a mission to aid and support activities that contribute to the growth and development of businesses in Tioga County. We are pleased Restore NY funding will be used to rehabilitate two important structures in the Village of Newark Valley, providing updated housing for residents and commercial space for new businesses.”

Construction on the buildings is anticipated to start in 2025.

Welcome to the Village of Newark Valley!

We hope you find what you are searching for in this electronic view of our rural unique Village. Our one thousand fifty residents offer a sincere welcome to our friends and to those who are not familiar with the areas' rolling hills, vistas and other scenic attributes of New York's Southern Tier.

We are creating these digital pages of information so our citizens may seek information such as, Village Codes, Municipal Meeting days/dates and time; ask questions of your Municipal leaders and Staff via the e-mail format or just tell us "What is on your mind". Information must be easy to retrieve and we believe this user friendly format will be useful to everyone.

Our five members Board of Trustees welcome your insight and participation with the opportunities and obstacles in operating this community in the most fiscally responsible manner. We wish to improve infrastructure, tax base and attractions in our Village. With your comments and help - that will happen.

    MayorBest Regards
    James P. Tornatore
